Never did I see myself blogging slime. Here I am, a 34 year old mother of a 4 year old boy, and blogging slime, specifically green swam slime, is now just part of my everyday world.

Easy Slime Recipe

Slime is one of those recipes where you make it once, and you don’t need a recipe ever again! It’s a super easy combination of Elmer’s glue (clear or white), Borax, water and food coloring.

Making Slime at Home

Some recipes call for more expensive ingredients- like contact solution- and I wanted to create a slime recipe that used easy, inexpensive products you can buy in bulk to make loads of slime. The fun of this for kids is the process of making the slime, but also coloring it different colors.

The basic recipe for slime is as follows. This recipe yields about 1 cup of slime. You can double, triple, quadruple the batch even!

  • Elmer’s Glue: 1/2 cup. White or clear. I buy a huge gallon of it at Walmart for about $12 and it lasts forever!
  • Water: 1/2 cup.
  • Food Coloring: Use as desired. We’ve made all color and even mixed a few for fun themes (like brown and green for a swamp!).
  • Borax/Warm Water: 1 tsp plus 1 cup of lukewarm water.

The process of actually making slime is pretty easy, and fun for kids. Lots of mixing and kneading is involved which is great for little hand dexterity & developing fine motor skills.

*IMPORTANT: I do recommend a minimum age of 4, and kids who put things in their mouth should not make or play with homemade slime. For safety purposes, have a grown up handle the parts with powdered Borax. You can read more about the safety aspects of slime here.

  • Mix 1/2 cup glue with 1/2 cup water in a large-ish bowl. Mix to combine well.
  • Add food coloring to water & glue mixture (if desired).
  • In a separate cup, add 1 tsp Borax to 1 cup lukewarm water. Mix until Borax is fully dissolved.
  • Pour Borax/water mixture into glue/water mixture. Immediately stir, and a large ball of slime will begin to form.
  • Drain the water from the bowl, and put the slime back in the bowl. Knead it until a smooth, firm but moldable ball of slime forms.
  • Voila! You just made slime!
